How do you start a business? August 18, 2007

I feel like I’ve been in school too long, but until now it has just been rolling along like a natural thing. I’ve been in school so long and it has been so easy that I never gave much thought to the effort of making money.

Now I’m reaching the point where continued studies is becoming harder than starting to earn money. Soon I won’t be able to feed on taxpayers money any more, I need to start generating my own income. But how am I going to go about this?

I want to make most possible money with the least amount of effort. So an ordinary job is out of the question, such a job pays a fixed amount for fixed time units with very little flexibility. I want to find a way to generate income that becomes more effective over time so when I start making enough money  per time unit I can work less on boring stuff and spend more time on what I enjoy doing.

The best way to reach this goal is to run my own business where I set all the rules. But that path isn’t very clear to me. The business I most want to work in is one that makes games. But making games is hard work with lots of problems. Not all of the work needed to make a game is fun. Some of it is boring and sometimes you get stuck.

I’ve figured out that making games on your own is not a good idea. Unless the games are small simple creations made in a single day, a partner or two is recommended to stay sane. In order to start a serious business I need to find one or more partners that has the competences I lack. But even more important is that their visions are compatible with mine. How do I go about finding such people?

On top of all this a business needs a financial mind. We need to make a living while making our games. Game makers make games, we don’t necessarily know anything about marketing or handling economy.

Last but not least, I want to make the games I want to make. Not the games “the market” wants me to make. I really don’t want to conform and make standard schmups and crap that fills retail stores. I want to make original games. Not as original as the ideas a brain of an average game designer would spawn, I mean original in a good way. The games I want to make would probably never end up on the front cover of anything, but if it did it would outsell anything that actually does end up on the front cover.

Well, I’m probably overestimating the possibilities of original games. The majority of gamers are probably too lazy to even consider trying something new unless it is disguised as something they already know.

Anyway, I don’t think I’m getting anywhere with this post. It’ll just be rambling if I continue.
